My Commitments to You
When elected as Charleston County’s next sheriff, I vow to implement reforms across the department. Here are my top 5 priorities:
1. Opening up the department for independent audits
I will order an internal audit to examine the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office history of policing practices, and I will seek a detailed list of corrective action. I will also order a financial audit of the entire system, as well as any fund that depends on money seized from citizens.
2. Internal restructuring of the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office
As the next sheriff, I plan to create a streamlined structure of organization and remove waste at the top of the chain of command. I will also attract and cultivate a more diverse police force that is reflective of the community the deputies serve.
3. The creation of a Community Liaison Task Force, along with a designated community liaison deputy
This task force, made up of a diverse range of community members, will identify community issues and determine ways we can address the problem, together. I want the community to have a seat at the table when it comes to solving policing issues, instead of just conferring with members of my own department.
4. The creation of an Immigrant Coalition Committee, along with a designated community liaison deputy
This team, made up of a diverse range of members from the community, will determine best steps to heal broken trust with the immigrant community. The task force would also examine the housing of federal inmates and work to rescind the department’s 287(g) agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to release all nonviolent immigrants from our facility.
5. Reforming juvenile justice
As the next sheriff, I promise to reform how we work with juvenile offenders by implementing more of a restorative and rehabilitative learning environment, instead of resorting to punitive measures.
